Creating an Automation Profile

An Automation Profile defines which workloads are eligible for automated changes, and the profile's guardrails limit each change.

Automation is opt-in. Automation is disabled by default and enabled by you. When you enable automation, RealTheory can make configuration changes within the scope and parameters of your automation profiles, including any default values that you have not changed. See Automation Opt-In Requirements Explained.

Prerequisites

Procedure

  1. Navigate to Settings > Automation > Workloads > Automation Profiles.

  2. Click Create New.

  3. In Name, type a unique name for the profile.

  4. (Optional) In Description, type a description that helps users identify the purpose of the profile.

  5. In Owner, note that you are the owner of the profile.

Note: The owner's cluster access limits which clusters the profile can affect. See Automation Owners Explained.

  6. In Guardrails, click the edit icon on Workload scope, and configure which workloads are eligible for automated changes. See Automation Profile Guardrails.

  7. (Optional) To add more guardrails, click Add Guardrail, select a guardrail, and configure the guardrail.

Note: Some guardrails apply default values even if you do not add those guardrails. To change the defaults, add the guardrail and change the guardrail's settings. See Automation Profile Guardrails.

  8. (Optional) To limit when automation can apply changes, edit the maintenance window in Profile Settings.

Note: By default, automation can apply changes at any time. See How To Limit Automation to Specific Hours.

  9. Do one of the following:

    • To save the profile without assigning it, click SAVE. You can apply the profile later through a policy, as the default profile, or with EDIT ASSIGNMENTS on the Automation Profiles view. See Creating an Automation Policy and Setting the Default Automation Profile.
    • To guarantee that specific clusters use this profile, click SAVE AND ASSIGN, select the clusters, and then click UPDATE. A direct assignment takes precedence over every policy, so the selected clusters use this profile until you remove the direct assignment.

Important: After you assign the profile, automation can take a few minutes to start changing the workloads that the profile includes in the assigned clusters. Cluster readiness and owner access can narrow which workloads change. See Scope and Parameters.
